NEW YORK—Governors Island will be open seven days a week when it
reopens in May next year, according to the Trust for Governors Island.
The island will be open daily from May 24 to Sept. 28, 2014. It previously opened only on weekends.
The ferries, which used to be free, will now cost $2 round trip. The expanded schedule is a step in the trust’s larger plan to keep Governor’s Island open year-round.
When the island reopens in the spring, there will be a new tenant, a day spa. Two other current tenants, the Urban Assembly New York Harbor School and the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council’s Art Center, will both expand.
Governors Island has become more popular as expanded parkland, programming, and transportation options have been made available. About 26,000 people visited the island in 2006. In 2013, that number grew to 400,000.
Construction of 30 acres of new park and public spaces were recently complete. Additional new spaces will also open in the spring. A 10-acre section of park called the Hills won’t be finished until 2015. The Hills will feature a full panoramic view of New York City, including the Statue of Liberty.
